In a collaborative effort, Knott County 4-H, Knott Co Board of Education, Beaver, Carr Creek, Cordia, Emmalena , Hindman, and Jones Fork Elementary schools through their Family Youth Resource Service Coordinators participated in University of Kentucky’s 2021-22 “It’s Your Reality” program.  The program focus is financial literacy and life skills for 7-12^th grade students.  Knott County’s 8^th grade students take part annually in the event.  

Results showed overall positive impact of knowledge gained:

• Budgeting money 84% (versus 50 % pre-program)
• Making wise financial choices 88% (versus 46% pre- program)
• Understanding the effect school performance & career choice on future lifestyle 86% (versus 43% pre- program)
• Cost of maintaining a household 86% (versus 56% pre-program)
• Cost of raising a child 81% (versus 54% pre-program)
• How the amount of income will affect lifestyle habits and purchasing ability 86% (58% pre-program)
• The importance of saving for future economic goals 86% (versus 56% pre-program)

• How the amount of income will affect lifestyle habits and purchasing ability 2% (15% pre-program)
• The importance of saving for future economic goals 5% (versus 19% pre-program)

Volunteers are essential to the program’s success.  53 KCCHS teen volunteers contributed combined total of 318 volunteer hours to the program.  According to the 2021national volunteer rate, this is equivalent to $9,075 in-kind contribution to the program. Their impact on the program goes beyond monetary value.  The effort and mentoring opportunity truly enhances the experience for everyone involved. Other community volunteers provided support, as well, for a successful learning opportunity.
