Major Program: Family Development General

Plan of Work: Strengthening Families & Enhancing Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Since many annual programs were cancelled last year due to the pandemic, Clinton County Extension Staff were excited to reintroduce Pumpkin Walk in a revised format that better met health and safety guidelines due to Covid-19. 302 youth and adults participated in the event along with 16 different organizations and agencies. The outdoor event which had families walking a half-mile loop together included fall themed physical activity games, health screenings, community resources, family fall scene projects, and an early literacy book with family enrichment activities to complete at home. 77 families completed every activity available at the event, Evaluation data further revealed that 100% of participants learned something that will help children do better in school or at home. Many participants commented that seeing and learning more about the amount of sugar in soft drinks stood out to them as well as gaining awareness of how to receive help with health insurance. 50% of families shared that they read the provided book and completed one the family enrichment activity (creating a family scarecrow) within a few days following the event and commented that “it was a great thing for families”. Families indicated an interest in future programs to assist them with ideas of inexpensive things to do together as a family as well as specific preschool and kindergarten activities in math and language. Additional events targeting child development, health, physical activity, and family togetherness will be offered to families throughout the year.
