Plan of Work: Strengthening Families & Enhancing Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Clinton County Cooperative Extension Service sponsored Adulting 101: Your Guide to Life Hacks for 93 high school seniors. The program targeted life skills to aid in the transition to college or the workforce. Students were able to practice life skills such as cooking, laundry & sewing, basic auto maintenance, money management, and job readiness. Prior to the program, 70% of students indicated average/good knowledge of the topics presented. Evaluations indicated that students gained the most knowledge in cooking and money management. 98% of students indicated the program provided information they can use in their own lives. When asked what they planned to do as a result of the program or what they would share with others about what they learned, students revealed the following: “As of today I will plan to open a checking account and it will be very significant in my future”; “Work on a resume”; “I plan on cooking more and doing my own laundry more often”; “That it’s important to be independent and learn things that will help you in your future”; “I learned how to check tire pressure and to sew buttons on. I can cook my family an omelette for breakfast”; and “Don’t be afraid to grow up”. Furthermore, parents indicated they also gained knowledge based upon what their students shared with them particularly related to clothing maintenance. Adulting 101: Your Guide to Life Hacks was a highly effective way to teach practical skills to help students successfully enter the next phase of life.
