Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Before 2020 we never realized the impact that social media would have in becoming a window to the world. With the COVID -19 pandemic many people found themselves at home looking for resources to stay busy and still feel connected. The McCracken County Cooperative Extension Service SNAP-Ed assistant found that using Facebook Live was the tool that would make it possible to offer personal classes without the in-person risk. The Healthy Choices for Everybody classes were offered in a closed group that was updated daily by posting a weekly lesson, recipes, and food demonstrations. The live video session held weekly, also served as a question-and-answer session.

The weekly sessions highlighted MY Plate, Food Safety and Reading Nutrition Labels. The assistant was able to demonstrate recipes using props and charts while inside a kitchen to aid in program delivery.  The classes were made up of 17 men and women and before and after the seven sessions progress was recorded through a Qualtrics survey that was sent to participants via email or postal mail and returned to the assistant.

  • 53 % said they ate fruit each day more often
  • 76% ate more vegetables daily afterwards
  • 59% stated they planned meals before shopping
  • 65% began checking sales before shopping more often
  • 60% were exercising for at least 30 minutes more a week
  • 59% made small changes to be active more often

At the conclusion of the Facebook live series many of the participants said they would be attending in person classes at the Cooperative Extension Service after due to their participation in  the video series
