Reading our way to Healthy Eating

Author: Marcia Moss

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Bullitt County Extension Service and Centerstone formally Seven Counties partnered to bring healthy eating to the Family Living Group. This group consists of adults that are challenged mentally who are trying to live on their own.

In the weekly classes lessons from portion sizes to reading labels are just part of the curriculum. One of the participants remarked that after the lesson on reading labels she has found herself reading more of the nutrition labels. She went on to say that she has also stopped buying the foods that have higher sodium content due to her new knowledge which in turn helps her with her high blood pressure and her weight issues.

Among consumers who say they are watching their weight, 81 percent read the nutritional panel on product labels and of these, 59 percent say they frequently or almost always read nutrition labels. Even consumers who aren’t necessarily diet-minded read the Nutrition Facts panel: 72 percent say they read it and among these consumers who are not watching their weight, 42 percent read it frequently or almost always.
