The Kentucky State University (KSU) Small Farm Program is an Extension program designed to help farm families with decision-making skills to solve farm and home problems. It includes educational programs that emphasize farm production, farm management, and marketing. It also includes the use and understanding of local county programs and USDA agencies and their programs, plus providing technical assistance in completing applications for the program and the entire application process.

A new channel catfish farmer in Hickman Co. has been mentored for the past 14 months. His fingerling catfish were stocked into 25 acres of ponds during May of 2021. Thousands of fish are stocked per acre in a multiple batch harvesting scenario where 1.0 -1.5 lb. fish are removed by cull seining and sold to live fish haulers for fee fishing operations or small-scale fish processers. It takes 12 to 18 months for channel catfish to grow from 6-inch-long fingerlings to harvest size. &nbs

Empowering clientele to propagate and produce their own fruit treesWith supply chain issues causing shortages in the nursery and food industries, and inflation and transportation costs rising dramatically, driving many products' prices higher including plant material and fresh produce; purchasing trees from nurseries may be an economic hardship for many limited resource clientele. Food deserts and increasing food prices also are an impediment to purchasing fresh produce for many individuals.

For Super Star Chef camp I created a “germinator”. It was a great activity for the kids, and they were shocked with how easily germs can spread. Children attending the camp were very excited to learn about why food safety is important and to investigate their hand washing skills. This was a great visual for the camp and I look forward to sharing it with more children in the future.
