Grupo de Mujeres Participants Continue to Thrive

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Educating & Empowering Individuals and Families to Make Responsible Choices and Develop Life Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Grupo de Mujeres program is a collaboration between KSU's Community Resource Development Program in Jefferson County and Eastern Area Ministries. The program is designed for Spanish speaking women who want a safe space to grow and build a community. The program consists of 3 core focus areas - lifeskill development, financial wellness, and health. I contribute to the program by educating the participants on financial wellness and general wealth building. At the beginning of the program in January 2022, many of the participants did not have many of the financial literacy skills that most people need. Considering that many of the participants are immigrants, they were unfamiliar with the financial systems in the U.S. or did not feel comfortable enough to use them. At the beginning of the program many of the participants did not have bank accounts and used cash or money orders to complete transactions. Since starting the monthly lessons on financial wellness, 3 of the participants who did not have bank accounts were able to start working and open a checking account. As of April 2022, 6 out of the 12 women were able to increase their knowledge on financial terminology.  As of May 2022, 8 out of the 12 women state they feel comfortable in using ATMs, checks, and bank cards to make transactions. As of July 2022, 8 out of the 12 women who have participate have developed short, intermediate, and long term financial goals based on strategies they have acquired from the lessons.
