Due to increased work responsibilities for parents, older siblings are often left to care for young children or they are being cared for by adolescent babysitters. Results of a local Family Resource Youth Services Center survey indicated that parents needed trained babysitters who are better qualified to care for their young children. Food insecurity describes a household’s inability to supply enough food for each member to live an active, healthy life. In Eastern Kentucky 1 out of every 6 individuals are unsure where their next meal will come from, and Laurel County has a 16.4% insecurity rate in the entire county.
