According to the American Heart Association, teaching youth how to prepare their own food will give them a skill they can use for a lifetime, they will be more likely to eat healthier as adults, and build self-confidence. The McLean County Extension Office collaborated with Family Resource and Community Education to provide the Super Star Chef three day cooking camp to children during the summer. McLean County is a small rural farming community in Western Kentucky. In 2015, McLean County was ranked 50th in the state for obesity rates in Kentucky (KentuckyHealthFacts.org). Since that date, the county has lost two of the three grocery stores; creating a food dessert in most areas in the community.
