Elliott County has a higher population of livestock than it does people. The Elliott County Extension Council and 4H Livestock Council feels as though the 4-H Livestock Program is a great way for youth to begin to feel the love for Livestock Production. Livestock production is a rewarding revenue for a growing family and in order for our youth to continue this scale of production in the future their hands need to have some experience.
Elliott County 4-H Livestock Senior members will begin taking more initiative in raising their 4-H livestock projects. Youth will continue agriculture practices into adulthood and will use agriculture resources available to farmers. The retention rate for Elliott County 4-H Livestock as well as, new members will increase by ten percent. Youth will have increased confidence, knowledge and responsibility of ownership.
Fifty percent of Elliott County 4-Hers will participate in livestock event classes. The youth participating in these programs will gain an appreciation for agriculture and the agriculture lifestyle. The youth will learn responsibility and commitment. The youth will become proficient at record keeping and finances, as well as the confidence to perform and exhibit their projects in front of large crowds.
Elliott County 4-Hers will improve their knowledge about their 4-H species. Participants will learn how to budget for purchases of essential items such as feed, fencing and show supplies and the importance of the responsibility of caring for their species which is totally dependent on them on a daily basis. Youth will learn about multiple species, breeds and sources of feeds. Youth will learn the importance of showmanship and sportsmanship as well as, become familiar with auctioneering practices. Senior 4-Hers will assist Cloverbuds and Juniors in classes and events.

Indicator: Youth will successfully raise an animal and exhibit it at the Elliott County Fair.

Indicator: Youth will be capable of identifying animal breeds and species as well as body parts and cuts of meat.

Indicator: Number of youth participants will increase. Youth will increase confidence, knowledge and skills and serve as role models to new participants.

4-H Livestock is a fun family oriented activity that engages exhibitors to enhance life skills such as public speaking, self-confidence, time management and responsibility. The 4-H Livestock program just completed its 12th year with 31 exhibitors. According to 4-H research youth that are involved in 4-H programming are four times a likely to contribute to their communities, this is particularly evident in the Elliott County 4-H Livestock Invest in Youth Show and Sale. MaKayla Rose, a 10 year exhibitor in the 4-H Livestock Club, became a certified livestock volunteer in 2016.
