Situation:
Family and Youth Development programming is essential for fostering healthy, supportive environments where both children and adults can thrive. By offering structured activities and educational workshops, UK Extension aims to build strong family bonds equipping young people and older adults with critical life skills. Guided by the Cooperative Extension’s National Framework for Health Equity and Well-being, our programming also addresses social and emotional needs throughout the lifespan, promoting resilience and positive relationships which are two of the key concerns identified in the top 15 needs of Kentucky’s statewide needs assessment. Investing in such programs can prevent future challenges by supporting early intervention and personal growth. Ultimately, these initiatives contribute to the well-being of individuals and the stability of communities, making them a vital component of social development.
County Situation:
Franklin County, located in Frankfort, Kentucky, is committed to fostering family and youth development through education, community programs, and support initiatives. With 44% of children living in low-income families and 16.1% experiencing food insecurity, local organizations work to provide essential resources and opportunities for growth.
In terms of health and well-being, Franklin County has made strides in improving maternal and child health, with 95.7% of children under 19 having health insurance and a decline in teen birth rates. However, challenges remain, including 15.7% of mothers smoking during pregnancy, highlighting the need for continued health education and intervention.
Mental health and well-being are crucial for the county’s youth, with efforts focused on reducing juvenile justice involvement. The rate of youth incarceration has dropped from 26.4 to 13.7 per 1,000 children, reflecting positive changes in community support and intervention programs.
For work and life skills development, Franklin County emphasizes education and career readiness. While 89.9% of high school students graduate on time, proficiency in key subjects like math and reading remains a concern, with only 36% of eighth graders proficient in math. Workforce development programs aim to equip young residents with the skills needed for future success.
Through collaborative efforts, Franklin County continues to enhance opportunities for families and youth, ensuring a healthier, more supportive community.
