Situation:

In 2019, Adair County Citizens identified health, wellness, and families among the top priority issues through the Extension Community needs assessment.  When compared to the state of Kentucky, Adair County falls below average for median household income and above average for unemployment, child poverty, and uninsured individuals. Combined, these issues put strains on families mental, physical, and financial health.  

Family and Consumer Science programs offered by the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service are equipped to address the issues to serve as a catalyst to to make Adair a more vibrant community.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Create safe homes within environments that promote and support the physical, financial and mental well-being of families throughout the life cycle.


Intermediate Outcomes:

Examine personal positive employability opportunities on a regular basis (at least annually).

Change in behavior related to healthy aging, independent aging and quality aging.

Participate in an activity or event that improves the built or natural environment.

Initial Outcomes:

Participants will identify one tangible and attainable way that they can increase their employability and workplace competitiveness.

Change in awareness, knowledge, and aspirations related to healthy aging, independent aging and quality aging.

Participants will identify one or more practices that will improve going green, disaster preparedness and a built environment.


Evaluation:

Initial Outcome: Participants will identify short, medium, and long-term employment goals and objectives related to maintaining and improving their positive employability characteristics.
Indicator: Participants will improve their ability to apply and interview for jobs.

Intermediate Outcome: Increased confidence in the workplace

Cultural Arts Competition Surpasses Expectations

    The 2023 Adair County Cultural Competition was the most highly participated in local cultural arts competition history. Novel marketing efforts by volunteers and staff lead to a doubling in the amount of entries received and a 50% increase in the number of those participating. In Kentucky, 12.9 million acres are utilized in formal farm operations (nass.usda.gov), with a growing usage of smaller properties being used to grow farm commodities. Green, Adair, and Russell counties, as rural counties, have a growing population that utilizes property to grow their own crops, then processes the crops for personal consumption. The jerky and food safety workshop was an undeniable success, with all participants being able to correctly identify the steps needed to make jerky.
