Situation:

With almost 97% of all Woodford County land involved in agricultural or residential uses, proper stewardship of natural and human resources is of vital importance. Woodford County’s western border also comprises 40 miles of Kentucky River frontage and about 40% of the entire Palisade region. This area is known to support very diverse plant and wildlife populations. With such a prominent and distinctive natural resource, environmental awareness for Woodford County residents is vital. County stakeholders have rated environmental stewardship and community awareness among their top concerns. Providing educational programs and services to increase environmental quality in Woodford County is needed to address these issues.

Measured improvement in water quality, habitat preservation, and improved soil health.

Clientele make informed management decisions for environmentally sensitive areas.

Success Stories

Pesticide Rinse & Return Program

Major Program: Water and Soil Quality and Conservation

Every year the Woodford County Extension Service participates in the state Pesticide Rinse & Return Program.  In 2021, 18 producers recycled the most amount of empty pesticide containers that Woodford County has in the past.  Over 1,200 empty pesticide containers were recycled that would normally have been landfilled.

Woodford County Pollinator Photo Contest

Recognizing the value pollinators provide to humans and our ecosystem, the Woodford County Extension Office in collaboration with the Woodford County Extension Master Gardeners, held the first annual Woodford County Pollinator Photo Challenge.There were a total of 37 adult that entered 93 photos and 2 youth that entered a total of 5 photos. The top 3 winners in each category (adult and youth) received pollinator seeds, pollinator ID cards, gift cards and native plants.The first year of this prog
