Enhancing Communication skills through public speaking and expressive arts Because the Elliott County 4-H program has always been an integrated part of classroom instruction, the question “What do you want from the 4-H program” was asked of teachers and principals at each elementary school. Each group answered “Communications and public speaking”. Teachers report that with the advent of technology, students don’t communicate as much as they once did so public speaking is even more frightening. However, the teachers, as professionals, understand the need for public speaking skills. Other major issues the teachers mentioned included environment and bullying
Elliott County youth will perform better in interviews and professionally because of their involvement in public speaking programs.

Middle school students will be challenged to speak in front of their peers through a

In 2018 Elliott County 4-H began the country ham program. Since Elliott County 4-H did not have a ham house a collaboration with Morgan County 4-H allowed 5 youth from Elliott County to participate. These youth learned the art and science of salt curing a ham and how to build confidence in public speaking. Elliott County 4-H in cooperation with Magoffin, Rowan, and Morgan County 4-H programs are conducting a 6 month Teen Leadership Academy. Participants completed an application process and screening to be accepted into the program. This is the first time Elliott County 4-H has had participation in the program, with four teens. In August of 2018 Elliott County 4-H Youth Development Agent, Katie Wallace, was approached by Dr. Mark Mains in hopes of creating a program for Kentucky Shooting Sports clubs that involved donating harvested deer to help fight food insecurity. After researching, Katie found a group that had this as their mission.
