pa·tri·ot·ism (noun) the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country. A large part of Americanism and demonstrating the patriotic spirit is proper display of our flag to acceptable conduct.  The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans pledge their allegiance.  Many Muhlenberg County homes, businesses, schools, and organizations fly an American Flag displaying their patriotism.  Over time, if not replaced, flags become worn, tethered, and in need of replacing.  The Muhlenberg County 4-H Teen Club is secured grant funding in the amount of $5,068 to purchase new, all-weather flags to distribute throughout our community.  The project goal was to not only replace old flags, but to prepare educational materials to include in the patriotic packages.   In addition, two Muhlenberg County Scouts Troops 3040 and 3241 have volunteered to properly retire worn out flags that are collected.

Patriotism is on display all around Muhlenberg County.   Private residences, public and private educational settings, businesses, and religious institutions all choose to proudly display the American Flag which is a symbol cherished by many citizens.   The average route from “home” to “town” will encounter approximately 15 American Flags on display.  Based on observations conducted by the 4-H Teen Club, many were worn and in need of replacing.  In a time of financial hardships, it was the desire of the 4-H Teen Club to provide a gift to Muhlenberg Countians to prolong the patriotic spirit.

4-H Teen Club members distributed new flags, and literature to 150 Muhlenberg Countians.  Educational materials covering the basic parts of the flag, how to display the American Flag, and the history of the flag was included in a booklet we have titled, The American Patriot’s Quick Reference.  The 4-H Teen Club partnered with Mr. Wood, US Army RET, to conduct this project to increase patriotism and educate others on the United State’s flag, it’s values of liberty, justice, and equality and its unique representation of freedom and national unity throughout the world.  It is important that citizens of the US give the flag the respect it deserves.

Prior to delivering the flags and Patriot’s Quick Reference, youth learned ever aspect of the material inside the reference tool, how to properly display and fold the American Flag.  Community members proudly accepted the gift and replaced worn flags throughout our community.
