During the school-age years, relationships with peers become the focus of a child’s attention. These years provide a child many opportunities to grow, learn social skills and develop conflict resolution skills. Unfortunately, sometimes relationships at this stage can be negative and harmful to the development of a child or young adolescent. In fact, 2010 statistics revealed that 1 of 7 children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade is either a bully or has been a victim of bullying. Bullying is becoming a major issue across the country, throughout our state and in our schools.
To address these issues, the Rockcastle County 4-H program implemented a bullying awareness in third and fifth grades in three elementary schools. The intent of the program was to raise awareness about bullying and how it affects individuals on a daily basis. Approximately 250 youth acquired information on recognizing the signs of bullying and the importance of taking a stand. Youth participated in personal development and teamwork exercises in effort to equip them with the skills and resources to treat each other respectfully. 69% of students who were aware that bullying was a problem, were able to recognize the signs of bullying and were able to take a stand either by trusting an adult or taking up for a victim. The students also created anti-bullying posters to hang in their schools to encourage other students to become aware and speak out against bullying. The bullying awareness is set to continue in our schools throughout the 2017 – 2018 school year.
