Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Access, Physical Activity, Health and Wellness, and Personal Safety

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Substance Use Disorder is a serious danger for youth today.  Truth and Consequences is a time honored tradition in Carlisle County Schools.  Carlisle County Middle School and the Carlisle County Extension Office partner annually to provide 8th grade students with a complex interactive program focused on the dangers associated with drug and alcolhol use.  With so many restrictions in place due to COVID guidelines, access to the school was an impossibility, but Carlisle County FRYSC and FCS Extension saw the need for Truth and Consequences to carry on.

Plans were made to create a virtual version of the program.  Rather than the typical range of scenarios, 2 of the most pertinent issues were addressed through careful scenario selection.  Community Partners representing the various consequences of the scenarios were interviewed and videoed to create a video version of the program.  With help from local law enforcement, local judges, county attorney, school administration, and health professionals, the video was created and aired for not only 8th grade, but 9th grade who was unable to experience Truth & Consequences the previous year during COVID shutdown.

Out of the 39 exit surveys completed, 37 of the students stated they have a better understanding of the legal consequences of substance use, 36 better understood the financial consequences of substance use, and 35 better understood the risk and harm of substance use.
