Planning Unit: Fulton County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: To encourage individuals, families and communities to make proactive choices to improve health and wellness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In an effort to safely engage clientele in an exciting new way, the Fulton County Recipe Club was started. Only 8 percent of Kentucky adults eat enough fruit, and about 6 percent eat enough vegetables, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recent report on U.S. fruit and vegetable consumption. Eating enough fruits and vegetables is an important lifestyle factor in the prevention against heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, certain cancers and obesity. In response to these statistics, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent in Fulton County has offered a paper mail/email recipe club featuring Plate It Up!. Kentucky Proud recipes. Info on planning meals, various bonus materials on nutrition education, seasonal recipes and other Extension-supported recipes to encourage the consumption of locally produced fruits and vegetables across Kentucky. Through Facebook shares via Fulton County Extension and other Community Partners plus flyers being passed through the community most of the recipe club participants are first time users of Extension.  Although a formal evaluation has not been conducted to date, participants have commented that they have enjoyed trying new recipes.
