4-H Educational Kits

Author: Meagan Klee

Planning Unit: Casey County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Enhancing Personal Development through Leadership and Healthy Life Skills and Practices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With limitation opportunities for 4-H school clubs and educational lessons in the classroom, Casey County 4-H continued with the disbursement of 4-H Educational Kits.

Earth Month Weekly Activities:

30 Easter Egg Planter Kits – included an Easter egg and seeds for planting.

100 Pollinator Kits – included an activity book with a compilation of activities and facts about bees and other pollinators along with 4 different flavor honey sticks with a tasting activity. Distributed at office and delivered to three 4th grade classrooms and one kindergarten classroom.

50 Watercress Seed Kits – included watercress seeds and information on cress nutrition and growing details.

450 Tree Saplings – included facts about Northern Red Oak trees and how to plant a sapling. 100 tree saplings for the Casey County Library’s Earth Day event, 400 tree saplings for all kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students in the public school system. The purchase of the trees was sponsored by the Casey County Board of Education and the Casey County Soil Conservation District.

30 Holiday Cookie Kits – included a cookie cookbook and a cookie cutter.

50 National Ag Week Tomato Starter Kits – included three tomato seeds, a planter, instructions on planting, and KY Proud recipe cards that included tomatoes.

10 Potato Maze Kits – included one potato and instructions on how to create a potato maze.

60 Tie-Dye Kits – included self-reflection and feelings activity along with one item to tie-dye and instructions.

75 Bread in a Bag Kits – included all dry ingredients pre-measured in bags along with baking instructions.

30 Leaf Collections Kits – included a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors and paper for leaf mounting along with leaf identification tools and resources and state fair information. Information and resources were shared with 4th grade summer school teacher to provide lesson to students.

30 Champion Art Kits – included primary color paints (red, yellow, blue), instructions on how to mix paint to make secondary and tertiary colors to make a color wheel, a canvas and brush, and details for state fair exhibits.

30 Robotic Hand Kits – included instructions and materials to build a robotic hand out of straws and string.

Agent coordinated with Adanta Regional Prevention Center to provide weekly kits (20 kits per week) for their clientele during Earth Week. Any additional/surplus items were delivered to a kindergarten teacher at a local school for further educational opportunities in the classroom.

Over the course of six months, a total of 570 kits were distributed to Casey County youth reaching over 80 families. Information about the kits was posted on social media (Facebook and Instagram) as well as sent through Remind 101 and email to teachers. Liberty Tourism also helped share information (on social media) about the kits. Some kits required reservation, while the majority were available to all. Parents were very receptive and appreciative of the activities/materials and shared pictures on social media of their kids utilizing the kits. By providing this alternative educational opportunity, youth and parents not only had further exposure to Kentucky 4-H, but helped our program reach under-served audiences.

Bread in a Bag: One grandmother shared her granddaughter, “Made her first loaf of bread with her first favorite recipe”. They shared it with family members and had to slice it very thin due to its popularity. Grandmother shared with others where they could pick up with the kit with several more interested in the activity.
