Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Life Skills Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Oldham County 4-H Shooting Sports program develops character, commitment and many other important life skills. The lessons learned in Shooting Sports can be applied to every aspect of daily life, especially the relationship between hard work and personal success. The Shooting Sports program continues to be identified as a top priority within the Oldham County 4-H Program, requiring partnerships with local land owners, fair board and a local indoor shooting range.

The Oldham County 4-H Shooting Sports educational program continues to grow with over 90 members, 24 certified adult coaches and 10 certified teen coaches. This past year State Competition members earned 54 state trophies, four state level jackets and three top state level scorers.

“While applying for the University of Kentucky, my daughter applied for the Jeanne E. Bray Memorial Scholarship which is sponsored by the National Rifle Association.  She is one of eight nationwide recipients of this prestigious scholarship for the 2108 fall semester. During the application process, she submitted copies of her multiple 4-H Shooting Sports Marksmanship accomplishments. As a parent, I believe 4-H instructors/volunteers were a key part in this accomplishment, the years my daughter spent with the Oldham County 4-H Shooting Sports Club were instrumental in forming her basic firearms safety habits and knowledge of shooting.” Quote provided by parent of 4-H member.

Building effective leadership is the key to managing a program of this magnitude; developing club officer team, certified teen and adult leaders and community partners who collaborate to offer quality educational opportunities to the youth of Oldham County.
