Planning Unit: McCreary County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Livestock/Forage Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In 2020, the McCreary County Extension office, in conjunction with the McCreary County Farm Bureau office, ran a county agricultural investment program for resident agricultural producers. During this year, McCreary County received more phase-1 funds than in the past, which opened up the program to many more applicants. Twenty of our area ag producers received a total of $20,000 in cost-share funds which they used to construct hay sheds, purchase equipment such as squeeze shoots, improve fencing, purchase bulls, and improve their on-farm operations. In early 2020, the McCreary County Extension office was forced to work remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, all CAIP applicants completed their Beef Quality Care and Assurance training with the McCreary County Extension office and received their three year certification in order to be qualified for the program. All applicants also completed their CAIP education requirements through the McCreary County Extension office, and received aid in completing and updating their Ag Water Quality plans. Through this program, local ag producers were able to improve their farming operations and I was able as a new agriculture agent to meet and establish a good working relationship with local farmers and producers. During this time I also established a good working relationship with my Agricultural Development Council members, and we worked together to complete an updated county comprehensive plan to identify programs and projects best suited for future agricultural development fund investments in the county.
