County Fairs can be so much fun with all the lights, rides and countless booths filled with sugary based foods, but for some it is an opportunity to show the community their creative sides, by entering exhibits. Last week the Owen County Cooperative Extension Office helped the Owen County Fair Board put on the Annual Owen County 4-H Fair and Horse Show. The Owen County 4-H Youth Development Agent urged parents and students to bring projects that they either did in a 4-H club meeting, at school, or just at home for their own interest to show the community all their hard work over the past year. After taking entries on Tuesday morning, the 4-H exhibits were ready to be judged, there were sewing project, photography, trends, Country Hams, Garden Crops, Farm Crops and so much more. The 4-H exhibit entry numbers were somewhat down due to COVID compared to previous years but at this fair there were over 60 categories among the Division areas and over 250 entries.

The thing that was extra special was that there were three first year 4-H members who’s exhibits won their area and one of the three members won the “Best of Show” for his Horticulture Project which was a re-purposed water tank turned into a greenhouse that he used to start his garden plants for this year, all the winning exhibits will be going to compete at the state fair in August.

After talking with the first-year members on their success they can’t wait for next summer and all the opportunities and projects in the upcoming year!
