Author: Linda McClanahan
Planning Unit: Mercer County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Agriculture and Horticulture
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Mercer County Cattlemen's Association teamed up with the Mercer County Ag Agent and NEP assistant to celebrate National Beef Month. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, some traditional activities could not take place. So an alternate plan was created with special activities to promote beef. A social media campaign was held on the MCCA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MercerCattlemensAssociation, where people entered to win a cooler bag filled with grilling supplies and recipes.
#MCCABeefMonth activity kits were assembled with collaboration from the Mercer County Extension Office with 60 kits being distributed. Several activities for kids were included along with tools for adults (meat thermometer, cutting board, etc). In addition to these activity kits, the Mercer County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources recorded 2 videos and posted on social media of accurate agriculture books featuring beef cattle production. Mercer County Ag Agent and Nutrition Education Program Assistant collaborated to record a video preparing the Kentucky Beef Council Steak, Summer Squash and Red Onion Salad recipe. In the video, they discussed food safety tips, incorporating beef in a healthy diet, cuts of beef and more. Recipe cards were included in the beef month activity kits and also available at the Extension Office. The video is available for viewing at: https://www.facebook.com/MercerCattlemensAssociation/videos/155571876574312. Videos posted on social media reached 1,538 people.
