Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Fostering Life Skills Education in Youth and Families

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Continued engagement of high school aged 4-H teens was the goal when the Daviess County 4-H Teen Board was established in 2019.  The 4-H Teen Board provides high school aged 4-Her’s further education in the areas of college and career readiness, leadership and communications.  Members have assisted with decision-making for the 4-H program and elected officers; some serving their first time in that role.   Additionally, it provides an opportunity for the 4-H Teens to continue interacting with one another outside larger 4-H events which is sometimes difficult in a larger county with multiple high schools.  During the 2020-21 pandemic, meetings focused on college and career readiness with career speakers joining via ZOOM.

The comradery of the 4-H Teen Board worked to build enthusiasm and excitement for the members to volunteer at 4-H Camp.  This year eight of the eleven volunteers who attended 4-H camp were current or recently graduated members of the 4-H Teen Board.  Four were eighteen and were able to serve as adults, the other four served as teen leaders.   As is the case with many volunteers, of these eight Teen Board members, five of them had to take time off from jobs to attend 4-H Camp.   Two of them had not been to 4-H Camp before, but six had a combined total of 41 years of camp experience!  Several had started camping with 4-H Cloverbud Camp at the age of 5.

Previous experiences and volunteer training ensured everyone remembered they were there to help their 4-H Campers have a fun, positive and safe 4-H Camp.  One of the eighteen year olds said 4-H Camp was always one of the best weeks of his summer.  He plans to keep volunteering so more kids can have the same positive experience.
