Outcome: Initial Outcome

Developing effective leaders is critical for the future and success of any organization and the Grayson County Extension Homemakers are no exception when it comes to developing leadership and growing membership. In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Grayson County Homemakers took a chance on a new way to reach people (and stay connected amongst themselves) and have seen some success though the Pen Pal and Out and About programs.

Nearly 50% of current homemaker members participated in a new Pen Pal program that was facilitated by one of the new Co-County Presidents. Each participating member was paired with another member from a different club. Pen Pals were given prompts monthly and encouraged to send a card with a written note using the prompt. This helped members stay connected and engaged with each other during a time when meeting in person was not possible.

When restrictions began lifting, the Out and About program was launched. The goals this program has set out to achieve are multifaceted. The County Council meets in the odd months, so, in the even months Out and Abouts occur on the second Saturdays to encourage members and potential new members to casually meet for fellowship. Local businesses serve as the meeting spot for the program. Current members set up at these local spots with the intention of recruiting possible new members through guests attending with current members or interested individuals from the public. Informational brochures and enrollment forms are on hand at these events for those that would like to join the organization.

While data supporting the efficacy of this program is not yet available, the efforts made by current leaders within the organization show promise for future growth for the Grayson County Extension Homemakers.
