4th Annual Equine Conference Northern Kentucky

Author: Bob Coleman

Planning Unit: Animal and Food Sciences

Major Program: Equine

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

2020 was a year we will remember for the challenges it gave on how to provide educational opportunities. The Northern Kentucky Horse Network (NKHN) has been a leader in providing education to their members with the Equine Conference. During the early planning stages for the 2020 conference a very extensive program was planned, and speakers lined up. Then a change was needed. The organizers with help from the county agents Don Sorrell, Dan Allen, Michelle Simon along with the Extension Horse Specialist Dr. Coleman worked to go from an extensive all-day program to a reduced but significant 4-hour program via zoom. This took changes in how to register participants, develop the focused program and change how the program was to be delivered. With speakers from Ohio and Kentucky travel was reduced but there still needed to be work done to ensure that presentations would be available to all who participated. Like many organizations moving to a virtual format was commonplace but with the NKHN group it was important to continue the Equine Conference in some form. They did not want to take a year off. The organizing committee and the UK Extension folks worked to deliver a strong program covering the topic of Nutrition and feed selection. The conference went off with out a hitch and while attendance was reduced from a typical face to face event members of the Network and those who have participated in previous Equine Conferences realized this group was committed to providing quality education opportunities. Look for the 5th Annual Equine Conference in November 2021.
