Author: Sarah Drysdale
Planning Unit: Ballard County CES
Major Program: 21st Century Skills (Career & Workplace Development)
Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotions
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Fifty-seven youth with diverse backgrounds were educated on agriculture through the 21st Century After School Program Summer Enrichment opportunity. Youth spent the first week learning about all aspects of agriculture including horticulture and transplanting plants; animals on the farm; where wool comes from and the uses of it; soil profiles; bees and beekeeping; agriculture related math; the limited resource, soil, for growing our food; and sun safety on the farm. Extension professionals from Graves, Calloway, McCracken, Livingston and Ballard all participated in organizing or teaching at the Ag Fun Day culminating event on June 4, 2021. Other professionals helping were from River Valley Credit, the Ballard County Soil Conservation Service, Ballard Memorial FFA and Ballard 4-H.
With the easing of COVID-19 Protocols it was one of the first opportunities for the entire Ballard County Extension team to work together on a program, with Paula Jerrell, 4-H serving as coordinator and Sarah Drysdale, FCS and Tom Miller, ANR teaching classes during the day.
