UK Baleage Research Increases Profitability

Specialist Involved: Jimmy Henning

In 2018, UK was approached by a Fayette County producer with 108 tons of improperly handled and ensiled silage in round bales, asking if it could be salvaged. Due to the poor condition of the plastic wrap, the forage was a total loss, estimated at $5400 in lost feed value ($50/ton dry matter basis). A UK specialist engaged the producer in a baleage research trial. As a result, the producer was able to improve production and storage practices for their baleage. Since 2018, no bales have been lost due to improper handling or ensiling, and the forage quality has improved. In 2020, this producer was able to harvest 275 tons (dry matter basis) of high quality baleage, worth $13,750 (@ $50 per ton).
