Etiquette for the Real World

Author: Paula Jerrell

Planning Unit: Ballard County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Leadership Ballard

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

As part of a leadership and job shadowing effort, 4-H teens also completed an etiquette training.  This was a total extension effort for our youth.  First the youth took part in resume and interview skills at their school, then six 4-H youth job shadowed at essential businesses, primarily agricultural businesses.  The were placed at a grain elevator, an ag business that does soil testing for customers and a pharmacy.  The youth then came to the UK Extension Office for a etiquette lesson and catered luncheon.  Representatives of the businesses were also invited to join us for the luncheon.  ANR and FCS Agents taught the table etiquette lesson and the 4-H agent organized, taught, observed and did the evaluation for the program. Lessons included table etiquette, thank you notes, introducing people, meeting and greeting people and polite conversation. Youth reported learning many new etiquette skills including how to eat soup, proper passing, proper etiquette for eating bread and much more.  They also completed mock interviews and resumes.  Four of the participants have gotten part time jobs using their skills.  One also did the county, area and state mock job interview for 16-19 year olds.
