LSR Grant (phase 2) for Upland Oak Management

Author: Darren Morris

Planning Unit: Forestry

Major Program: Forest Education: Health, Management, and Utilization

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Research has indicated that white oaks are not regenerating in numbers necessary to maintain healthy upland hardwood forests throughout the Central United States.  In 2018 an LSR grant in support of the White Oak Initiative was approved with the goal of maintaining healthy upland oak forests by providing outputs such as oak silviculture guidelines, trainings for foresters, and landowner friendly informational guides to healthy white oak management.

This year, the “Phase 2” LSR grant for upland oak management was funded and approved.  All activities support 3 national Landscape Objectives in Regions 8 and 9.  This LSR project centers on the development of a Mobil App and Companion Website to facilitate continuity of white oak management throughout the Central US.  Some Mobile App features will include; a silviculture decision key, an oak evaluative guide, direct landowner and forester engagement with the ability to monitor progress, and the latest up-to-date training and education materials.
