Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Youth Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the County Extension Council, 4-H Program Council, local volunteers and Extension personnel were tasked with continuing to provide resources and programs to assist our communities. The 4-H Youth Development Agent spoke to local schools and community members to develop online programs that would teach life skills in a virtual format. As a result, the 4-H Reality Store (a career exploration and financial planning program) was converted to an online format. This program was presented to 132 local students in a 2 session virtual series. The co-partnering of the 4-H Agent, Youth Service Center Director, students and teachers were happy to experience the program in a new format, and relieved that they had not missed another yearly tradition. Results from the end-of-program survey indicated that 89.8% of those who responded now understand how to budget their money, 87.5% thought they could make wise financial decisions, 73.4% indicated they would create a personal budget, 83.6% thought they would start a savings account, 91.8% indicated they understood the difference between needs and wants expenditures, and 85.4% wanted to set future financial goals and make plans to meet those goals.
