The adult obesity rate in Bell County is on the rise. According to the Kentuckyhealthfacts.org the percent of overweight adults from 2016-2018 was 79%.
The Bell County Nutrition Education Program (NEP) Assistant teamed with the Family and Consumer Science (FCS) Agent to promote a program called Weigh to go Wednesday. By implementing the Healthy Choices for Every Body Curriculum the NEP Assistant was able to educate the participants on the importance of making healthier food choices, portion control, knowing the limits of fats, sugars, and salt, reading labels and meal planning. Plus getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity into their daily routines. Upon entry to the program only 31% of the participants were making small changes to be active on a daily basis. After completing the program 92% of the participants were making small changes to be more active daily.
One participant stated ”This program has really helped me learn how to make healthier choices when preparing meals plus putting a little extra effort in being more active every day”.
