Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

During the COVID-19 Pandemic many Bell County residents took interest in raising their own food and growing their own gardens.

The Bell County Nutrition Education Program Assistant used the 2020 Fall Victory Garden Campaign to help educate local families how to raise food in small spaces using small containers, raised beds/flower beds and pallets.

Seven families participated in the Victory Garden Campaign. Turnip, mustard, lettuce, carrots and spinach were a few of the seeds given to the families along with potting soil by the Extension Office to help get their gardens started. A gardening calendar was given to each family as well.

50% of these families have never grew gardens before but 100% had never grew in small spaces. 75% chose container gardens while 25% chose raised beds or small flower beds.

These families were so amazed at how easy it was to get started and to actually grow things in containers and other small areas. 100% of the families that participated harvested and enjoyed vegetables they planted. Not only did the adult enjoy it but the children were involved to. One person stated” I never knew it was this easy plus it has cut back on my grocery bill. I will definitely do this again.”
