Due to the Covid-19 restrictions on having face to face meeting this Ag and Natural Resources Agent decided to collaborate with the Kentucky Giant Pumpkin Growers Association as well as University of Kentucky Extension specialist to develop a program to educate those interested in growing giant pumpkins and watermelons. This ANR agent scheduled a zoom webinar for Growing Giants and promoted the training through Facebook, email, and newsletters.
Two individual growers gave presentations on how the grow their state record breaking fruit. A University of Kentucky vegetable production specialist presented a session on soil fertility and grafting while a University of Kentucky pathologist gave a presentation on disease prevention and control. This ANR agent presented a powerpoint on general genetics, seed starting, and growing outside.
The promotion was viewed by over 500 individuals. Forty-nine people from 13 different states registered. All evaluations were favorable. Many participants indicated they would try growing giants for the first time or those trying in the past will now have a better understanding of growing practices that should give them more positive results.
