During 2020 most in person Extension programming had to be cancelled in Edmonson County. While many counties utilized virtual programs the Edmonson County FCS Agent realized that many families in Edmonson County did not have adequate internet service to watch live or in some cases even recorded programs online. The FCS Agent began "Extension-on-the-Go."  Educational projects, activities, crafts, and more were packaged up individually and left outside the Extension Office for families to pick up at their convivence. Kits were available for youth and adults and covered a variety of topics. Some of the kits were owl pellet discovery, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, fairy garden,  leaf collection binders, family meal time, Zen garden kits, needle felting,& bird feeders. In October of 2020 the FCS Agent partnered with the two local businesses that sell pumpkins in the fall. The FCS Agent distributed Halloween Fun Kits and Pumpkin Carving kits at these locations and the businesses donated pumpkins to youth.

In total 1,265 educational kits were picked up by Edmonson County families. Families were asked to fill out an online Qualtrics survey when they participated in Extension-on-the Go. In the survey 21% said they were extremely familiar with extension and were current 4-H or Homemaker members, 11% had never heard of extension before, 41% had attended programs or utilized extensions services in the past and 27% had heard of extension but had never utilized services or attended programs.

When asked  "What skills have you or your child developed  as a result of Extension-on-the-Go?" and " How has Extension'-on-the-Go impacted your family?" in the survey clients responded with:

  • Helps him to follow directions.
  • Our cooking skills have improved with the bread in a bag kit! We've made bread twice since then. My now understands the basics of following directions in order.
  • Patience during these hard times and proud that they made something as a family.
  • The cooking kits helped them learn the skills of measuring items that you need to do right for your dish to turn out good.
  • Ability to follow directions. Willingness to work on a task till complete.
  • Gave me an activity to do with my young granddaughter and encouraged me to try new recipes I had not tried before
  • My daughter has cooked several meals she learned from the kits.
  • Honestly this program has been a blessing for our family. Being stuck at home with either homework or electronics was making us all cranky but we look forward to Tuesdays now because we get to do a family project. Both my children ask me often what day is it because Tuesdays cant get here fast enough. Thank you for giving us family time!
  • We love them and look forward to getting new kits. These kits has been a great help with being at home all the time. We are actually having jump rope contest
  • Has gave family things to do together and family time is special.
  • The kits we have picked up have been very helpful in keeping my grandson busy instead of playing video games. Fun family projects. They have been a learning experience while having fun, thank you for helping keep our kids and grandchildren busy while having fun.
