The Mammoth Cave area is the heart of the dairy industry in Kentucky. Over 50% of the state’s total dairies and over 75% of the state’s total dairy cattle are located in south-central Kentucky. Many people do not fully understand where there food comes from, and it is important to continually promote the importance of agriculture in their lives.
UK Cooperative Extension Service Agents from this area joined forces to produce an educational video that not only focuses on dairy production, but also adding value past the farm gate. Legacy Dairy is operated by the Jones family in Hiseville, KY. They bottle the milk from their cows right on the farm. The pasteurized, non-homogenized milk is directly marketed through farmers’ markets and a growing number of retailers throughout the region.
Agents from Allen, Barren, Metcalfe, & Monroe Counties work collaboratively to produce this video. The video is available to view at https://youtu.be/IMJApExF4W8
The video has been available less than six months, and has already been viewed by 197 youth. It is now being introduced to elementary school teachers for use in their classrooms. The video is an excellent resource because it presents factual and industry correct information. The video is currently in use in Barren, Hart, & Metcalfe county schools. Monroe and Allen counties will use it during the 2021-2022 school year. The video was also used as part of the statewide 4-H dairy education program.
