The ANR Agent helped enroll a cooperating producer in the cereal rye project being conducted by UK Extension and American Farmland Trust. The cooperating producer was already interested growing cereal rye for cover crop seed production. The cereal rye project afforded the producer the opportunity to learn to grow cereal rye with minimal risk. Cereal rye grown in Kentucky is primarily used for cover crops, the intent of the project was to determine the quality of the grain as it pertains to the distilling industry. The cooperating producer seeded 38 Acres of cereal rye in the fall of 2020, agronomical recommendations from UK Extension Specialists were followed to grow the crop. The cereal rye crop grew extremely well during the 2020/21 growing season, harvest was recently completed in summer of 21. The data gathered from this field along with several other sites across the state will be used to help make recommendations for other producers looking to possibly add cereal rye to their crop rotation.
