Author: David Koester

Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Commercial

Plan of Work: Improving Economics & Sustainability of Agriculture & Farm Management

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Boone County Horticulture Demonstration Plot is in its fifth year of production. For growing season 2021 the plot was divided into plasticulture tomatoes, beans, cut flowers, squash and peppers. Varieties are evaluated on each of these commodities and the plot is open to commercial as well as the public. All are welcome to view the plot and make their own evaluations. 6 commercial farm market vendors have adopted and are growing one or more of the varieties highlighted at the demonstration plot. 2 growers are now using plasticulture production and utilizing the plastic layer owned by the Boone County Extension District Board.

The demonstration plot has also been used by the horticulture agent and FCS agent to teach 7 video classes. Vegetables were filmed in the field, production techniques were discussed and the FCS agent taught the preparation and nutritional benefits of the produce.

As in all previous years the produce is harvested by master gardeners and donated to Master Provisions. The cut flowers are harvested and donated to Hospice.
