Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
Forage production is a key component to every livestock and horse farm whether it be in the form of pasture or hay and whether it’s purchased or grown. The forage quality is the determining factor in many different aspects dictating growth rate, operating expenses and ultimately profit or loss. Boone County ANR Agent collaborated with other northern Kentucky agents and provided programs including Spring Renovations of Pastures and Hayfields, Forages 101, Building a Year Round Grazing System and on-farm pasture walks. These programs focused on fertilizing fields for optimal forage production, forage species and how to increase tonnage, reducing weed populations with a combination of forage species and herbicides, rotational grazing, utilizing equipment and harvesting at the proper time to improve the quality of forages. 76 producers participated in the educational programs and 18 pasture walks were conducted with individuals. 100% of the 94 producers tested their soils and fertilized according to the soil test results providing optimal soil fertility to produce forage crops. Following these programs 100% knew how to identify cool season grasses and legumes and when to sow the different species for the greatest germination rate. Producers also learned the stages of growth to determine the proper time to mow and learned the importance of baling hay at the proper moisture percentage to produce high quality forages. 95% of these producers tested their hay for nutritional quality and utilized that knowledge to supplement their horses and livestock accordingly, ensuring the nutritional needs were met to achieve the growth rates desired and maintenance levels required for production.
