4-H Healthy Habits Workshop Encourages Mindfulness and other Healthy Choices
Author: Ryan Farley
Planning Unit: Fayette County CES
Major Program: Health
Plan of Work: Improving Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles
Outcome: Initial Outcome
As the past year has shown, developing healthy habits within youth is more vital than ever. Whether it is healthy nutrition, mindfulness, emotional intelligence or physical activity, youth need to start early developing healthy lifestyle habits that they can carry on throughout their entire life. In an effort to address healthy habits within Woodford County youth, Woodford County 4-H developed a two-part series of workshops to expose and educate youth on choices they could make that would benefit their holistic health profile. The first workshop introduced the topics of journaling and yoga, where youth learned about the benefits of both, and reviewed how to develop these habits as a means to benefiting their emotional, mental and physical health. Session two exposed the youth to healthy nutrition and taught the participants how to read food labels and think critically about what they are consuming. They also discussed financial health, and talked about budgeting and healthy spending habits. In response to participating, each youth reported paying more attention to food labels, attempting to journal daily and being more aware of the benefits of yoga and physical exercise.
