The Extension Service is a place for all people to receive information- whether it’s about the insect they find in their garden; how to improve their soil, can their garden veggies, prepare for retirement; or ways to improve their leadership skills. The Wolfe County ANR Agent receives a variety of client questions throughout the year, but several of those questions revolve around timber and forested lands. According to the 2017 Census for Agriculture, 45% of the farmland in Wolfe County is woodlands. While woodlands are not typically synonymous with farmland, the land can be managed to turn a profitable yield, just like “typical” farmland. The Mountain Parkway, a large throughfare for the eastern part of the State, is currently being expanded and improved. With this expansion, land is being purchased by the State to make improvements to the road. In January 2021, an absentee landowner contacted the ANR Agent to discuss his property in Wolfe County, property that will eventually be purchased by the State as part of the Parkway expansion. Over the course of several phone calls and emails, the landowner and ANR Agent have discussed the various ways that the land and resources can be managed before the State takes ownership. The landowner has been in contact with the KY Division of Forestry to have the timber assessed, once that was done, he reached out to the ANR Agent once again to discuss finding a certified Master Logger in the area. We have also discussed proper logging and how it may affect the Indiana Brown Bat, an endangered species. The Agent continues to communicate with the landowner as questions arise throughout the process.
