The Bullitt County 4H Sewing club started with 5 members in 2016 and has grown to 17 attendees in 2018.    With three Homemaker volunteers helping the club leader and Extension Agent for Family Consumer Sciences, students have learned to sew and express their creativity through sewing skills.  The participants have made 10 dresser scarves, 8 baby quilts, 3 sets of table placemats, and 12 pillows.  Six 1styear students have completed their skirt or pajama bottoms.  Three 2nd year students have completed a skirt or pajama bottom along with their 2nd year skirt or pants.  Another 2nd year student is completing a garment for her young cousin. One student has completed an Upcycling project by sewing a garment using parts of other garments. Two sewing club members have participated in the Quilts of Valor project sewing a quilt for two service men. Ten members have prepared their projects for the County 4H Fair.

As the students learn new skills and complete projects, their self esteem and confidence have blossomed. One father reported his daughter “gets excited and begins talking about the club meeting for over a week beforehand”.  She talks about what she learns or sews for several days afterwards showing her project to everyone she can. She now brings her own sewing machine in to the club meeting and takes projects home to finish.

With such growth in the club and enthusiasm for the youth learning to sew, the Bullitt County Homemaker leaders have planned a style show to showcase the Sewing students and their garments and projects.
