Plan of Work: Leadership & Volunteerism

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

During the height of the pandemic when most everything was shut down in May 2020, Janet Turley found a way to continue to reach 4-H members and allow them to apply skills they learned throughout the year by conducting a virtual horse judging and hippology contest to District 6 4-H horse project members. The virtual events were so successful it was recommended that Janet teach how to conduct these contests at national conferences.

In September of 2020 Janet taught “Conducting Virtual Horse Judging and Hippology Contests” at the Volunteer Conference of Southern States. A total of 26 volunteers from various states across the nation including Hawaii, California, Oklahoma and Texas participated in the virtual workshop. Janet taught how to use Google Classroom to conduct virtual contests as well as how to use Microsoft Quiz Forms. 100% rated the presentation 5 out of 5, 90% said they would implement at least one of the ideas that was presented, and 70% would implement at least 2 ideas that was presented. Survey comments included: “Love the content, you worked really hard and made a great platform”, “Thank you! You obviously have put a lot of work into this”, “Great information. Definitely worth the Saturday sign on”, “So glad to have presenters that are “can do”. Finding through Covid not everyone feels that way! Great information and kudos on all of your hard work. Your county and state are fortunate.”

In February 2021, Janet was selected from a competitive selection process to present at the American Youth Horse Council Symposium (AYHC) at their virtual conference. Janet presented a workshop on “Tips and Tricks to Learning Options” where she shared how to use Google Classroom to host clinic and contest information for horse judging and hippology contests. Janet created a Google Classroom specifically for AYHC participants to view horse judging classes and hippology tests. So far ten volunteers have accessed the classroom and its resources.
