Resource Donation Drive

Author: Jessica Hunley

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Economic Development

Plan of Work: Support Community and Economic Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Over the course of several months, we have been accepting donations from community members of materials such as fabrics, scrapbooking materials, and/ or crafting supplies line yarns.  After a little time, we had substantial amounts of donations and after some restrictions were lifted and we were able to reopen to our Madison County Homemaker Groups, they were able to come in rotationally and periodically to  browse and identify any of the materials that they deemed essential to their personal uses.  Several clubs collected substantial amounts of the material and supplies that they saw fit to be very useful and have repurposed the donations for projects in which they can create new items that they are going to be offering back for donation within the community.

One example where the resources were repurposed and reused is that one of the quilting groups have been utilizing miscellaneous scrap pieces to assemble quilts for cancer and hospice patients or their families.  Another example would be, as one homemaker noted, is that she was able to enhance her collection of materials in which she use various forms of needlework to create a variety of crafts.  She often takes her crafts to various venues, such as craft fairs, where she ultimately used her resource management skills to sell her items and gives her an additional opportunity for economical gains.

By offering this service, our local office was able to create an additional opportunity for our Extension Homemakers to enhance some of their skills in  using resource management techniques as well as offered some of them an opportunity for economic advancement within the local community.
