4-H SET Club

Author: Aubrey Lawson

Planning Unit: Clark County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Expand Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)

By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field.

Madison County 4-H continues to provide SET/STEM programming for youth, even throughout the pandemic. By utilizing technology platforms for virtual meetings, and providing participants with a kit of supplies for pick-up at the extension office, 19 youth participated in a 6-week Science, Engineering and Technology Club. These youth completed projects in areas including architecture, electricity, plant science, environmental science and more. All participants reported that they found SET to be a fun topic and 79% reported that they are interested in a career in STEM.
