Plan of Work: Equine Management, Recreation and Leadership

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Northern Kentucky Horse Network (NKHN) was established in 2005, with the help of Campbell, Kenton and Boone County ANR agents.  This organization has grown to approximately 425 members. The NKHN has been recognized by UK Equine specialists and the KY Horse Council as a role model in using local horse owners to develop and implement equine programs. During a fall of 2016 Horse Network Events Committee meeting, NKHN leaders asked the Campbell, Kenton and Boone County ANR agents for their support in developing and implementing a higher level equine program.  After a couple meetings with NKHN leaders, Dr. Bob Coleman (UK Extension Equine Specialist) and Kenton, Boone and Campbell County ANR agents developed the first Northern Kentucky Equine Conference.

The conference was held on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Boone County Enrichment Center.  This all day conference was attended by 161 individuals which included: 55 - 4-H youth who received 4 to 6 educational hours, 32 NKHN volunteers, and 13 program speakers. Program speakers included: UK equine specialists, UK equine graduate students, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital Vet, University of Louisville Equine program and the marketing manager for Time to Ride from Texas.  Program topics focused on Time to Ride program, founder, carbohydrates, parasite control, genetics, feeding myths, hay feeders and equine ethics and social media. Based on the program survey, 56% of those who attended said they learned a lot about the individual topics.  44% said they learned a little new information that will help their equine operation.

A second annual equine conference is being planned by NKHN leaders, Dr. Bob Coleman and Campbell, Kenton and Boone County ANR agents for November 10, 2018.
