Allen County Extension Tree Giveaway
Allen County has a vast landscape from flat crop fields, rolling hay and pasture fields to dense hardwood forest. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, 21% of Allen County’s landscape is considered to be woodlands. Providing more trees in our woodlands and home landscapes beautifies the scenery and allows wildlife to thrive.
2020 has not been a normal year for anyone. COVID19 struck the country in March and people have not been able to get out and do things like they normally would. The purpose of the tree give away is to beautify the landscape, teach individuals how to grow a plant and help people to relief stress and spend time with family. The Allen County Extension Office provided 350 trees of 7 different varieties to 175 families on a first come first serve basis in the month of March and April.
The tree giveaway was a successful program that helped many families beautify their landscape and allowed them to spend time with their families. Individuals commented saying “thank you so much for doing this! We planted the trees with our kids and we had so much fun” and “thank you for the tree giveaway, it was nice to take my mind off of everything and enjoy nature”. This program was a great success and is planned again for next spring.
