Plan of Work: Enhance Life Skills of Youth Through School Enrichment and After School Programs

Outcome: Initial Outcome

At the end of the school year 2021, Caneyville Elementary School received school administration permission to invite the Grayson County 4-H Agent for programming with students. The agent was able to schedule lessons for April and May with the 4th and 5th grade classes. Primarily focusing on SET activities, the cow eyeball dissection lesson was done with both grades, as the current 5th grade students missed the opportunity in 2020 due to Covid-19. Additionally with the 4th grade students, the agent planned a new SET activity for the group, building paper rockets and launching.

Program support for the 4-H Agent was used to purchase the eyeballs needed for all students to have one to dissect, as they were still unable to work with partners or small groups. In all, between the two grades, 72 students dissected the eyeballs, learning about all parts and function. In surveying the students after, 85% said they enjoyed that particular lesson.

The rocketry lesson with 4th grade students was a new lesson for the agent to teach in school, but proved to be the favorite of the students. On the first day of the lesson, the agent and assistant brought materials for the students to build their rockets, learning about parts and function of each. The students and teachers assisted prior to the lesson but saving and collecting 2-liter bottles for the rocket launches. On the second day of the lesson, the forces of flight and external factors were reviewed before beginning launches. Rain for the day of the launches held off, and students were able to enjoy each launching their rockets twice. In total 36 students at Caneyville Elementary learned about rocketry, including the three main parts of a rocket, the forces of flight, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and external factors.
