Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Agricultural Diversification and Marketing
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The Pasture-to-Plate, beef retained ownership program conducted with Iowa State's Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Coop had another productive year in spite of the pandemic. Loads were shipped in August and February involving 130 head, from 19 operations, seven of which were first time participants. Had our first producer to send calves from Garrard County, as a result of hearing about the program during the UK Beef IRM Summit. The program was discussed during the Summit as an alternative marketing method for producers. Several Summit participants have inquired about the program since and/or consigned calves to the program. The success of the program and its benefit to producers was highlighted in one of the UK Beef IRM Podcasts in April that the agent was interviewed. UK Extension Beef Specialists have also contacted the agent about their compiling all the data we've collected in the program since 2005, to determine statistical significance of various management programs, especially those prior to shipment, as well as carcass variability.
