Plan of Work: Outdoor Recreation

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Each summer for the past four years, Gallatin County 4-H has offered a fishing derby at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds.  Last year because of the pandemic, we offered a virtual fishing derby which children and parents enjoyed.  This is a joint adventure with the fairboard, the county, several local businesses and tourism. "Kids enjoy feeling included and there isn't a better way to instill responsibility in children than by teaching them how to fish", according to California Fish and Wildlife.   A young child, who does not get outside often,  felt important and successful after she had the biggest catch of 30 fish.  "Fishing offers an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with family and create lifelong memories", according to California Fish and Wildlife.   Grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles were with their children- encouraging them, helping them, and just having a good time.  Thirty-five children  ages 5-17, three teen volunteers, four volunteers, and 20 parents and grandparents participated in the fourth annual 4-H Fishing Derby.
